Middlemarch and Conferences

by Andrea Elizabeth

I’m in the middle of the non-contemporary Masterpiece Theater 1994 miniseries, Middlemarch. This is my first exposure to George Eliot’s classic story. It’s reminding me a bit of the BBC production of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford as it is also about the transition of a small English town toward “progress”. The characters are very complex, and I can’t predict how it will turn out. I’m impressed with the exploration of altruism, female submission and education, self denial, and discretion.

Discretion is also the theme in St John Cassian’s Second Conference.
